Description

Fashion and Culture provides a comprehensive, in-depth, critical understanding of the ways in which the fashion industry has come into existence, has evolved over time and might develop in the future. The unit covers a series of themes, which are characterised by diverse and interdisciplinary perspectives on issues that impact the fashion industry across fashion styling, fashion promotion and fashion business practices.
Through seminars and lectures, students will be introduced to the sociological and cultural dynamics of the global fashion system, learn about the relationship between anthropology and fashion, the connections between local and global fashion, and the implications of these on consumer behaviour. The unit also highlights and may inform a variety of areas that can be explored in the dissertation, particularly when it comes to the sociological interpretation of and reflection on contemporary fashion practices, and the link/s between fashion and other forms of cultural manifestation. Academically, students develop their critical thinking skills and the ability to generate connections between past and present trends.
