Penalties for late submission of coursework

Standard University arrangements apply. ANY late submission will result in the grade 0-NS being

allocated to the coursework.

Retrieval of Failure

Where a student fails a module (less than 40% for undergraduate modules) they have the right to attempt the failed assessment(s) once, at the next resit opportunity. If a student fails assessment for a second time, they have a right to repeat the module – but at an additional cost.

Final Opportunity: Noon Friday 12th July 2026.

Urban and Rural Regeneration

The Coursework Scenario for the 2024/2025 Academic Session

You must research with local estate agents ( Alternatively fleurets.com) to find two licensed premises (public houses) for sale or auction. One should be located in an urban environment and the other in a rural community.

The Task

Note: The coursework task consists of three parts

Part 1: Please research and discuss the factors that may have led to the closure of the public houses in your case study. If you cannot find the specific reasons, research statistical information about the general reasons why public houses are closing at a high rate. (20% weighting) (LO1)

Part 2: Please consider and propose alternative, logical, and economically viable uses for the two public houses. Evaluate whether these proposals would work well in the location and justify their suitability. It is essential to suggest/ discuss and consider more than one alternative use before justifying your final choice. (40% weighting) (LO1, LO3)

Part 3: Describe the social and economic benefits the repurposed buildings will bring to their location and how they will assist in the local regeneration. Consider both the positive and negative impacts on the local community in the short and medium term and how they fit into the urban and rural context.”. (20% weighting) (LO1, LO3)

All three parts of the Task must also be completed to pass the coursework.

Urban Regeneration

Some urban areas are targeted for regeneration due to challenges such as deindustrialisation, dereliction, economic decline, and mass deprivation. These issues are typical in modern urban environments.

Rural Regeneration.

Rural or non-urban areas often require regeneration due to economic decline, outward migration (usually to cities), and deindustrialisation. Some rural areas lack opportunities for young people, leading to social isolation among minority groups and physical isolation due to unreliable public transport and services.
