Vocational Scenario

You are a Data Analyst Intern at Premier Financial Services Ltd, a small but expanding firm offering personal loans to individuals and small businesses. Facing strong competition, management wants to use data-driven insights to improve its loan approval process, risk management and customer service. Review published and raw data, apply statistical tools and present your results clearly with visuals and brief explanations.

Part 1: Understanding Published Business and Economic Data

  1. Identify and discuss sources of published business and economic data useful for decision-making (for example government databases, industry reports and international organisations).
  2. Describe, in your own words and with examples, the differences between descriptive, exploratory and confirmatory analysis.
  3. Critically evaluate the methods of analysis used in at least two published business or economic data sources and how effectively they present information for decision-making.
  4. Critically evaluate the differences in application between descriptive, exploratory and confirmatory analysis on real datasets.

Part 2: Analysing the Loan Dataset

  1. Calculate descriptive statistics (mean, median, mode, minimum, maximum, standard deviation) in Excel or another tool and explain what they show about the customers or loans.
  2. Include and evaluate at least one qualitative dataset or insight (for example customer comments or loan officer notes).
  3. Carry out a correlation analysis between selected variables and present it visually (scatterplot or correlation matrix).
  4. Carry out a simple regression analysis to predict an outcome such as loan approval, interpret the findings and justify the method.
  5. Reflect on the strengths, limitations and suitability of the techniques you used.

Part 3: Applying Statistics in Business Planning

  1. Apply your statistical insights to quality management and operational efficiency.
  2. Make practical recommendations for improving loan approval strategies, managing business and credit risk, and targeting suitable customers.
  3. Justify each statistical method used and explain how it supports business decisions.

Part 4: Communicating Your Findings

Present your findings using appropriate charts and tables (bar charts, pie charts, histograms, scatterplots, correlation matrices). Explain why each visual was chosen and how effective presentation helps managers make faster, clearer decisions. Include clear screenshots of your workings.
