The poem which effectively explores the moral theme in London by William Blake. Throughout the poem, Blake uses literacy features to convey his moral theme with the conditions in the city of London where he lived. Blake uses the poem to show poverty, disease and suffering which gulfed between them and the rich during the industrial revolution.
At the start of poem, Blake talks about what he sees as a walk through the streets of London:
“I wonder thro’ each Charter'd street.
Near where Charter'd Thame does flow”
Starting off from this, Blake uses a choice of words to show the London has become so given that he has been choked with commerce that has become Chartered or owned. To even the point Great River Thames has been chartered. This has left the poor be left with nothing and is big reason of cause of the poverty and moral theme that Blake sees throughout his journey.
This becomes clear when Blake shows his distress throughout his journey:
“And mark in every face I meet.
Marks of weakness, marks of woe”
This becomes clear when Blake uses repeats of “mark” which emphasizes the suffering is not great, and people faces have permanently been scared and suffering he pain. “Weakness and woe” suggest hopelessness and helplessness. In the first stanza Blake makes use word choice and repetition which makes it evident that moral theme with the way of London has become.
