Introduction

Unit 9 focuses on the practical considerations when teaching adult learners as well as their motivations for learning. There are example lesson plans covering both grammar and skills-based online lessons which equip learners with the tools required to produce their own plans for adult learners. The unit also focuses on self-appraisals when writing lesson plans in order to help learners reflect on their ideas and make improvements. The unit will provide learners with understanding and the real life skills of  lesson planning for this teaching context.

1. Understand the principles of teaching adult learners

1.1 Explain the main principles of teaching adult learners English as a Foreign Language

1.2 Explain the benefits of self-study for adult learners

2. Understand adult learners’ motivations to study English and techniques for utilising their motivations to achieve effective learning

2.1 Explain how to create and sustain motivation in adult learners

2.2 Discuss various intrinsic and extrinsic motivation factors that cause adult learners to study English

2.3 Describe how learner autonomy impacts adult learning

3. Be able to produce lesson plans for adult learners in an online learning environment

3.1 Produce a full vocabulary or grammar-based presentation, practice and production (PPP) lesson plan for an online lesson for a group of adults

3.2 Produce a full skills-based lesson plan for an online lesson for a group of adults

3.3 Complete a self-appraisal of the lesson plan designed for adult learners
