Unit 21 Dairy Production Nutrition: Feeding and Diet Management Assignment 3
| Programme | BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture |
| Unit title | Unit 21: Dairy Production Nutrition |
| Assessment title | Assignment 3 – Feeding and Diet Management |
| Criteria covered | B.P3, B.P4, B.M2, B.M3, B.D2 |
Scenario
Correct nutrition and feeding management of dairy cows is critical to herd health, fertility, milk production and farm profitability. Throughout lactation and the dry period, the dairy cow needs the right levels of energy and protein to meet production targets, support fertility and maintain body function and pregnancy.
The Hartpury College dairy herd manager has asked you to produce an illustrative report showing how feeding and nutrition, changes across the dairy production cycle and ingredient availability influence efficient, cost-effective business performance. Use diagrams, tables and graphs throughout.
Task 1: Written Report Including Two Formulated Rations
Create an illustrative report on dairy cow feeding and diet management for the herd, ensuring the required foodstuffs are available and correctly prepared, and that others are informed of any supply problems. The report must show in-depth understanding of diet management and supply within a dairy system and include a detailed review of nutritional requirements, feeding practices and grazing management, with well-reasoned recommendations for improvement.
Assessment Criteria
| Criterion | To achieve the criterion you must: |
| B.P3 | Explain the importance of diet management and feeding practices throughout the dairy production cycle. |
| B.P4 | Demonstrate competent feeding and diet management of dairy cows to maintain health and production targets. |
| B.M2 | Analyse the impact that nutrition, diet and feeding management have on health and production targets. |
| B.M3 | Demonstrate efficient feeding and diet management of dairy cows to maintain health and production targets. |
| B.D2 | Demonstrate, with a high degree of accuracy, diet management and feeding of dairy cows to maintain health and production targets, evaluating the impact of nutrition and own feeding and diet management tasks. |
Criteria Guidance
Pass (P4) – Meeting health and production through diet
- Nutritional levels: energy and protein.
- Ingredients: home-grown, purchased and fibre sources.
Merit (M2) – Analysing impact
Examine in detail how the P3 and P4 items affect health and production, and how success is measured:
- Milk yield and milk components
- Herd health
- Body condition score (BCS)
Merit (M3) – Formulate two rations
Formulate two rations for dairy cattle (for example different breeds or stages of lactation) and include:
- Targets such as days in milk (DIM), milk yield and components
- Ingredients and amounts, including minimum and maximum inclusion
- Nutritional levels of each ration
- Recommendations
Distinction (D2) – Evaluate your diets
- How each diet meets the targets you described
- Strengths of the rations
- Constraints or issues encountered
- Possible improvements
